PTA Certification and License Requirements Minnesota

To become a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) in Minnesota, you must graduate from an accredited physical therapy assistant program and pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE). Unlike some states, Minnesota does not have a state jurisprudence exam requirement.

Minnesota does not have any requirement to undertake any local state-level exams. However, all candidates seeking initial licensure in the state must complete the National Physical Therapy Examinations (NPTE) to ensure a minimum standard of knowledge and competence after graduation and before entering the workplace.

Licenses must be renewed every 2 years and during that time you must complete at least 20 hours of continuing education, including a minimum of 2 hours on professional ethics.

Update 2018: The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) has recently launched the Physical Therapy Licensure Compact for PT’s and PTA’s.

The purpose of the compact is to essentially create an interstate license that will allow a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant to practice outside of the state in which they obtained their license.
