Looking for Answers: How Consumers Make Health Care Decisions in MassachusettsBlue Cross Blue Shield of MassachusettsApril, 2007 Would you spend more time choosing a new car than a new doctor? Many Massachusetts residents do, according to a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts survey of 1,000 individuals. The research shows that the lack of objective information or independent ratings on doctors or hospital leads consumers to rely primarily on subjective recommendations from professionals, friends and family. Health Care Opinion Leaders' Views on the Quality and Safety of Health Care in the United StatesCommonwealth FundKatherine K. Shea, Anthony Shih, M.D., and Karen Davis, Ph.D. July, 2007 The 11th Commonwealth Fund Health Care Opinion Leaders Survey asked a diverse group of experts for their perspective on ways to improve the quality and safety of health care in the United States. Survey participants agreed that the current health system is not achieving and is not designed to foster high quality. Responses indicate strong support for greater government leadership; creation of a new public–private entity to coordinate quality improvement efforts and set a national quality agenda; changes in the way providers are paid; greater integration of providers; and reforms to promote medical homes.
